As a celebration of this legendary photographer's contribution to music videos and pop culture, I have collected all thirteen music videos that he directed, from Madonna's Cherish in 1989 to Shakira's Underneath Your Clothes in 2001. David LaChapelle pays tribute to Michael Jackson with a new image portrait that shows the late King of Pop as a modern-day martyr. The image is part of a trilogy inspired by Mexican saint cards.
“I don’t think he was capable of hurting anyone. I think there’s something really biblical about what happened," explains David LaChapelle of Michael Jackson’s life and pedophilia accusations. “His lyrics are so naive and so beautiful. It’s one of the most epic stories of our time, to go from such heights to such depths. He’s a modern-day martyr.”
The famous celebrity photographer has always wanted to capture Michael, but it never happened, “Photographers weren’t nice to him. He got scared.” LaChapelle used a young Jackson lookalike for this portrait, which was shot in Hawaii. The devil in red was played by a friend of LaChapelle, a performer in Cirque du Soliel.
