Martyr by Davood Salek

Davood Salek, a 22 year old American photographer, shares with Homotography his portrait Martyr, featuring model Warren Yoo. Taken this past summer, the portrait is a revision of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.

“I made it to convey the burden of the modern gay persona,” Davood explained to us. “We are forced to represent a wide span of issues that we may feel wholly indifferent to. Its about rejecting your own face value and being true to oneself.”

With the recent drama involving Adam Lambert and Out magazine [Aaron Hicklin’s Open Letter to Adam Lambert, Out], this is certainly a hot social issue in the United States.

The martyrdom of Saint Sebastian is a big inspiration in the art world. Here are some of the iconic paintings depicting this subject. The artists are Andrea Mantegna, Il Sodoma, El Greco, and Carlo Saraceni.
