Co-curated by artists Stuart Sandford and Sichi, the exhibit Boy BANG Boy runs in London's East Gallery between 6-18th August, 2010, with a private preview on the 5th. Centered around images of young men, the exhibit features works by artists Stuart Sandford, Ryan Pfluger, Sakiko Nomura, Daniel Karlsson, Eiki Mori, Ignacio Lozano, Florent Routoulp and Jeff Hahn. According to its press release, “Boy BANG Boy is a provocative exhibition celebrating the image of the boy. The exhibition brings together selected artists, from around the world, who work predominantly with the photographic image. The artworks presented are prevalent, whether intentional or not, of narcissism, egoism, voyeurism and the romanticism found or achieved in everyday life.”

Ryan Pfluger, The Portrait of a Gay Man

 

I’ve been following and admiring the work of photographer Ryan Pfluger for over a year. My tendency to frame images with black borders is highly inspired by the way he presents his work. Yesterday Ryan wrote a post on his blog that resonated with me. I am struggling with finishing my PhD in a field that doesn’t interest me any more. I suffer from the same body issues he talks about, which are magnified in the mind of a gay man. Being a Muslim Arab adds even more social & family complications to finding that happy state. I think many of us would identify with what Ryan is talking about, give it a read.

Remember that Jimmy Choo for H&M leather jacket I was singing the praises of? Well that jacket, alongside other pieces from this capsule collection, is the star of an advertorial in Out’s Model Citizen weekly feature, ahead of the collection’s release on November 14.
