Best of 2008: Diesel F/W Campaign

The Diesel Fall-Winter 2008-2009 ad campaign is the latest entry in Homotography's Best of 2008 feature. The campaign is very intriguing and mysterious with stylish black and white photography by John Scarisbrick. The shot of the male model with the bull head is one of my personal favorite images of 2008.

As a bonus, here is a brand new foot fetish inspired ad from the Diesel Spring - Summer 2009 campaign, by photographer John Scarisbrick as well, with model Jon Kortajarena having his feet (while wearing sneakers) ‘worshiped’ by a pervy looking old man. I will post the whole new campaign once it is available, so keep checking Homotography.

This photo, despite seeming to depict nothing more than a comically crude gay foot fetish, is so much more than that, which is why I think it's great! There are clues as to the context scattered everywhere, but they are not substantial enough for the narrative to be pieced together. First, there is the slight apprehension in Jon, which suggests that it is his first time (either with this guy, or having his feet worshipped). And his clothes seem very out of place in a place with such decor, leading us to think that the older man has hosted the encounter. But as ever, there is ambiguity, so it could in fact be Jon's home (and his trophies), which would make the whole thing much more subversive, because it would take it out of the young-guy-strapped-for-cash-and-reluctantly-agrees-to-have-his-feet-worshipped-by-older-foot-fetishist scenario. So he could outwardly be the trendy, athletic, trophy winning stud, with a secret fetish for older guys worshipping his feet. There is, of course, so much more: the discarded mannequin with feet protruding, the drawn curtains and stultifying atmosphere, the 'enthroned' position that Jon takes, the complete loss of control in the older guy! A final thing to note is that men's shoes have always had phallic connotations, from medieval armoured sollerets to winklepickers in particular. But the plastic tip covering the toes in converse type trainers is also somewhat suggestive of an erect penis emerged from the foreskin. In this sense, the ad is quite unabashedly phallic in addition to being fetishistic!
