Book :: Dennis Hopper - Photographs 1961-1967

A must have for any photography and pop culture aficionado, Dennis Hopper: Photographs 1961-1967, is a limited edition boxed set of Hopper’s iconic images of the 60s era.

Having been encouraged to pursue photography by his friend James Dean, Dennis Hopper explains the motivation of his photography in this 60s era, “I was doing something that I thought could have some impact someday. In many ways, it’s really these photographs that kept me going creatively."

The special moments featured in this extensive (530 pages!) book include Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, Tina Turner in the studio, and Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery.

A third of the featured images have never been published before, and come from Hopper’s own personal archive. The book also features interviews with the photographed personalities, with Hopper himself, his family and friends.

Hopper is most known for his acclaimed acting (Devil Without a Cause, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet) and directing (Easy Rider). His next movie is Alpha and Omega, coming out in 2010. Dennis Hopper’s manager confirmed yesterday, October 29, that the artist has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.

Released a couple days ago, there are only 1,500 copies of this deluxe edition book, each numbered and signed by the photographer himself. Weighing over 22 pounds, the book is rather expensive, but I think this is a worthy investment.
