The Darkness & Light of Richard Avedon

I have randomly come across this special Richard Avedon documentary ‘Darkness and Light’ from the 1995 American Masters Series. The 1:30 hour special is a captivating look into the life and work of one of the most important and influential fashion and portrait photographers ever. Watch it after the jump.

Performance by Richard Avedon

“We all perform. It’s what we do for each other all the time, deliberately or    unintentionally. It’s a way of telling about ourselves in the hope of being recognized as what we’d like to be.”  -Richard Avedon

Released last year, the book Performance features more than 200 performers captured by Richard Avedon in rare and never-before-seen images. This includes iconic names such as Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin, Judie Garland, Cate Blanchett, Andy Warhol, Sofia Loren, and Marlon Brando.

Comedians, dancers and performance artists are also featured in this must have 304 pages book.

Performance, Encore?

Homotography reader Daniel tipped me off to the resemblance between Performance, Steven Meisel’s new editorial in Vogue Italia, and Alice in Wonderland by Richard Avedon back in 1973. As I browsed Avedon’s images, it became clear to me that it was a source of inspiration behind Meisel’s new editorial. Then I remembered that Avedon had a book published last year, and wait for it… it is called Performance. I think Avedon would have been mighty proud of the repeat performance!
