Photography Spotlight :: Matt Albiani

 

I discovered the photography of Matt Albiani earlier this year after coming across his brilliant photography book Lifeguard on Duty. There is a distinctive Weber-like quality to Matt’s images, with the focus being less on the physical sensuality and more on the emotional connection. The New York based photographer communicates so much through the light composition of his images, the faces of his models and their body language. It is no wonder he has worked for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Interview, Vanity Fair, Victoria's Secret, Nautica, Out, and Esquire.  Here is a selection of Matt’s photography, including two of my favorite models Travis Hanson and Cory Bond.

Lifeguard on Duty by Matt Albiani

 

Published in June 2009, ‘Lifeguard on Duty’ is the result of years of travel across America, with photographer Matt Albiani capturing lifeguards in their own territory. A former lifeguard himself, Matt draws an emotive portrait of these young guys with a style that I find as a cross between Bruce Weber and Hedi Slimane. The combination of Matt’s emotional connection to the subject, and his skillful photography (having shot for Ralph Lauren, Nautica,Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria's Secret, French Connection, Vanity Fair, Allure, Interview, Elle,…) results in a must have photography book.
