EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Didio

You must be living under a virtual rock if you haven’t seen the work of Brazilian photographer Antonio Cesar Bezerra, who is commonly known as Didio. From the pages of Junior magazine & Terra’s The Boy to top blogs such as Made in Brazil, Charmants and OhLaLa Mag; his sensual images are everywhere.

Didio was very kind in granting Homotography an interview that sheds light about his photography, his life, and his hopes and ambitions. We start with an introduction about Didio and then present the interview with samples of his fantastic photography work. It was extremely hard to pick and choose which images to use from his vast archive.

When asked about his story with photography and his career Didio explained, “The male image and physique has always moved me. When I was young, I remember looking at those books of art from masters such as Michelangelo and others, and I was impressed and fascinated with the muscle, the body and its beauty. I studied fine arts, artistic design, painting, sculpture, and photography... Also, fashion always inspired and fascinated me, and at the beginning I thought I wanted to be a designer. I moved to São Paulo to study fashion and I worked as a designer for 15 years. During this period, I have photographed, more as a second career. I have worked as a professional photographer since 1995. Today, photography is my life, my devotion and religion. I love this universe that is full of male beauty that is powerful, it is a representation and personification of the gods. I think about the images all the time. The lights and shadows, how to bring the models and deliver natural images that are simple, intimate, hot, sensual... This is a bit of my little world, my passion, my madness.”

Homotography: What was your first professional camera and what model do you use now?

Didio: Here in Brazil it has always been very expensive to buy a professional camera and I did not come from a rich family, I always had to work to be able to buy my things. I remember I bought a Russian camera, very cheap. That was my first camera. I have since used many brands. Today, I prefer the Nikon film and digital equipment. Digital  is more practical as it allows me to do more tests. This leaves the children more comfortable because they can monitor the outcome of the photos.

H: Other than physical beauty, what attributes do you like to have in the models you shoot?

D: I love boys who are more sensual, more abused. I like models who work without labels, who try to create images without thinking or worrying about what other people are saying. I also like them to be cheerful and determined.

H: You shoot male models most of the time. Why don't you shoot more females too?

D: I have photographed many women. I still do. But I only put on my blog my passion, which is the male. I have photographed great female models such as Gisele Bündchen, Naomi and many other beautiful women. I love photographing powerful women who are like a femme fatale.

H: Are you interested in shooting commercials (like Steven Meisel and Bruce Weber for example) in addition to photography?

D: Yes, I want and need to do that. I'm trying to show and expose my work and seek ways to travel and do some wonderful work.

H: Do you usually plan and think about the photo shoot in advance, or do you prefer to go to the location and then decide how to shoot the model?

D: I think about photography and possibilities all the time. I keep a draft book where I record my ideas. When I have a photo shoot with a model, I take these drafts to use them. It is more palatable to plan and try to keep everything calm and organized.

H: Usually your models do not wear much, mostly underwear (which we like a lot :) Are you interested in fashion photography or do you prefer capturing human beauty without the fashion world complexities?

D: I always try to use my work experience for styling the shoot. But here in Brazil there are few good options for men's clothes. I learned over time that to have fewer people involved in the shoot with more models helps to focus more ... I love fashion and I do try using it in my photos, but it’s not that important.

H: Your photos are usually very soft, sensual, about beauty and romance. These days we see a lot of photography with violent and aggressive themes. What do you think of that?

D: It is a way. I am a man in love with life and men. I have other options to try to express that violence, such as martial arts, which is my other passion. I study karate and kung fu. Blood and weapons are things that are part of our nightmares, and I try to show love and beauty.

H: We regularly see your photos in Junior, Terra The Boy and so many other blogs and magazines. You shoot so many men. Do you know how many models you have photographed so far?

D: Hahhahahah. I have no idea. I think maybe I have taken pictures of about 1000 men, both youth and adults.

H: In addition to seeing more beautiful photos and more hot men, what can we expect from Didio? What are your projects in the near future?

D: I am planning trips in Brazil and other countries. I would like to photograph male models with their male relatives. I also want to shoot a book about models and martial arts. Some magazines are calling me to start doing some photography projects. Unfortunately, the world is in economical crisis right now, and I will try to alleviate this by helping the male models here in Brazil who are generally poor and sometimes can not pay for photos.

I want to thank Homotography for this opportunity to express myself and show a little bit of my life and my little world through this interview.

We thank Didio for the interview and for capturing and sharing all this beauty. Make sure to visit Didio’s official site and blog.

Beach-House Chilling with Pepe Jeans London SS09

Here is the new  Spring / Summer 2009 ad campaign for Pepe Jeans London by Steven Meisel with a theme of a group of friends lounging and relaxing in a beach house.

The campaign features models Danny Schwarz, Jamie Strachan, Daria Werbowy, Anna Jagodzinska, and Boyd Holbrook.

Danny Schwarz has been coming up a lot on my radar. When it comes to S/S 09, he’s already been featured here in the new D&G and the controversial CK Jeans campaigns. I will be keeping an eye on this stud! Danny boy is signed with Premier Model Management London and VNY Model Management New York.

While I loved Julien Quévenne in the Pepe Jeans S/S 09 ads, I prefer this one because it has more of a story and frankly seeing only Julien in either all denim or black pieces against a white background got a bit boring after the 10th image...

Battle of The Eyes: Travis vs. Patrick by Joe Lally

Who wore it better? We have two hunks (Patrick Rukai & Travis Hanson) from Major Models shot by the same photographer, Joe Lally, with a similar bold smoky eye makeup. The Hanson spread is for West East magazine, and Patrick is in an editorial called ‘Male Beauty’. I think they both look great and we win by having them both :)

I will be wrapping up the Best of 2008 feature soon (maybe after a couple of weeks, so if I missed any noteworthy 2008 photoshoot, send me a tip and I will try to post it). In the mean time, I have to feature this fun editorial by homotographer Joe Lally which was shot for Contributing Editor. Sometimes fun & vibrant colors can be all you need when you have models & a photographer like these.

The models are Doug Porter, Steve Gold, Cory Bond, Simon Tham, Tyler Lough, Manuel Taxeria, Tyler Kenyon, and Brian Shimansky. They are all with Major Models.

Promiscuous Post #1

Each now and then I will feature a promiscuous post, which is essentially an “around the web” post that features links to cool stuff on other fabulous sites and blogs. There is so much hotness in the blogosphere, so it’s OK to be a bit promiscuous and flirt around, just make sure you wear protection ;)

The Photography of Mark Seliger

I got curious about the photography of Mark Seliger after I featured the new Frankie Morello campaign he shot. Upon visiting his online portfolio, I found many images that I liked, from backstage shots of Milan fashion shows to portraits of musicians and movie stars such as Kurt Cobain, Paul McCartney, Casey Affleck & Lenny Kravitz. I share some of them with you here.

A Visual Overload of Hunks

I never thought that Hunk Du Jur could get even more hunky, but they just did! Launching a free iPhone application so you can check out hunk of the day on your iPhone AND launching an all-new Hunk Guide page that features total hunkness from all around the web. It’s hunk overload!

Congrats Chris & all Hunk Du Jur team on the new features!

Sneak Into The Boys Locker Room with Frankie Morello

Italian brand Frankie Morello has released their Spring-Summer 2009 ad campaign, and I like it! The campaign, which was shot by photographer Mark Seliger, has a theme of sports, both on the field and in the locker room (is the cute guy below checking out the girl or the boys?).

The ads were styled by Patti Wilson and feature models Jarek Pietka, Pernille Moeller, and Holden Nowell . And because the campaign only has a couple of shots, I bring you a few homolicious ads from their previous campaigns (note: only the ones above are from the SS 09).

Banned Calvin Klein Jeans Commercial is HOT

Calvin Klein has done it again! An edited version will be provided for cable TV in US. But if you live in Europe, you will enjoy the uncensored version. However, wherever you are, you can enjoy the full uncensored version in the youtube clip below.

The ad campaign is shot by Steven Meisel with models Danny Schwarz, Vladimir Ivanov, Anna Jagodzinska, Mikus Lasmanis, Carson Parker, Anna Selezneva, Tomek Szmulewicz, Natasha Poly, Vladimir Ivanov, and Edita Vilkeviciute. Mario Testino Takes D&G For a Cruise in Spring 2009 Ads

Dolce & Gabbana finally released the full set of their D&G Spring / Summer 2009 ads which were shot by Mario Testino at their site. I’ve been patiently awaiting them, and I must say that while they are good, they are not great. They are too fake and emotionless. I certainly like their Dolce & Gabbana ad campaign by Steven Klein better.

The models include Julien Quevenne, Danny Schwarz, Tobias Sørensen, Sebastian Lund, Zuzana Gregorova, Constance Jablonski, Imogen Morris-Clarke, Ariel Meredith, Tanya Dziahileva, Anna Gushina, and Cato Van Ee.

The DSquared2 Show Goes Fabulously on in Milan

The DSquared2 Men's Fall 2009 show in Milan is hands down the most fun runway to watch for me personally. Forget about the clothes, the presentation was a refreshing change of the somber and serious looking poses that most designers ask the models to strike. It was all about entertainment, from the intro with two dancers to the fun end with all models joining for ‘The Show Must Go On’ song and designer twins Dean and Dan Caten sliding down the staircase rail (Yes, they do!). Watch the show below.

The models who participated in the show include Sean Harju, Sean Opry & Julien Quevenne.

Weekend Hunk: Tym Roders by David Ellingsen

Say hello to the weekend hunk Tym Roders in a photoshoot by David Ellingsen that showcases the beauty and strength of an athletic body. I am guessing it is commissioned by Adidas, since that’s the only brand used.

What makes these images even more interesting is the fact that Tym was diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes when he was 11 years old. So his perfect-looking body is not a mere vanity, but a way of life with a healthy lifestyle.

Tym explains, “I work out 7 days a week. In addition, I dance and jog as much as I can. Working out and being healthy isn't a chore for me. It's a way of life.”

Exclusive Interview with Ignacio Lozano

You might have seen the auto-portraits of young artist Ignacio Lozano jumping on bed wearing nothing but a jockstrap & helmet, or his photography for Charmants where he captured Mr. Gay Europe 2008 Antonio Almijez and masked men in underwear in ‘Terrorist Mountain’. But who is this mysterious Ignacio, who likes to be called Black Sheep Boy?   Homotography brings you an exclusive interview with Ignacio and a look at the work of this talented 23 year-old hunk.

Ignacio Lozano (captured in the above two images by Maurizio Fiorino for East Village Boys) is a young Spanish artist based in New York City.  After completing his degree in Arts, Fashion Design & Communication in Barcelona, he began  working in events production & communication, never forgetting his passion of art and photography . In 2008 Ignacio moved to NYC and started working in the world of art. His primary form of expression is paint, but he's also a keen photographer. Currently, Ignacio contributes to a few magazines as a photographer and editor.

Check out some of Ignacio’s work below and proceed to read the full interview at the end of the post.

A sample of Ignacio’s paintings

Homotography interviews Ignacio Lozano

>> When and why did you move to NY?

I moved to New York one year ago from Barcelona where I have been living for 6 years. New York have always been my dream of where to live. Barcelona is a small city, New York is bigger and more competitive. If you have the energy, you can realize your work or dreams in NY, it’s a very open city for all forms of art, fashion, business... I was bored in Barcelona, but its such a great city in the summer and I keep a lot of friends and memories from there. I still visit Barcelona from time to time.

>> I am sure many NY boys want to know, is Ignacio single and available?

Maybe single, maybe available… but always available to meet people.

>> How do you describe your photography style and what do you want to communicate with your images?

I love to play with natural lights, no studio, no artificial photography. I like to show the real person. I capture urban guys, chilling, being sexy, but mysterious at the same time.

>> What is the connection between sex and photography for you?

I like to shoot real life, real stories, and sex is a part of our real life.

>> Name a few photographers, either dead or alive, whose photography style and work you admire.

Janine Gordon, Slava Mogutin, Hedi Slimane, David Benjamin Sherry, David Hilliard, and Donatien Veismann.

>> If you can choose to be photographed by anyone, who is your dream photographer?

I've already been shot by a few dream photographers like Maurizio Fiorino, Slava Mogutin, and Stuart Sandford. But I really want to be photographed right now by Hedi Slimane.

>> What projects are you working on and what can we expect to see from Ignacio in the near future?

I just started 2009 launching  my web site (NSFW). For the moment it is just a presentation but in a few weeks it will be working completely and will have more content. You will also see some new contributions for a few good magazines and more art projects very soon!

>> Finally, what do you hope you will have achieved and will be doing after five years?

I don't know what I’m doing tomorrow. So 5 years is an unexpected future to me.  Carpe Diem.

Homotography thanks Ignacio Lozano for his time and all the images he provided. Make sure to check out his blog and site (both NSFW). I leave you with some pictures of ignacio as a hot native american boy in Halloween 2008.

A Homotographer is Born: Michael Oats

Young Spanish photographer Michael Oats left me a comment requesting to check out his new editorial entitled, Allure. And while that work, which is published in the latest issue of Allure magazine, is really good, I am not that interested in female make-up editorials. But when I checked his blog, I discovered a wealth of editorials and photoshoots that really captured my interest and got me excited.

Michael Oats’ style is of the raw and unpolished kind that looks like amateur photography but is not. There is even a vibe of Juergen Teller and Terry Richardson in his photography, which I like.

Say hello to the man himself. Here is the young and cute 20 year-old Michael Oats.

I just came upon the work of photographer Paul Graves. His editorial style is rather unusual and he certainly grabs your attention with his images. He really sells the item to you! This is something he recently did for Max magazine.

I mean, how much more interesting the necktie becomes in that last image? This reminds me of my previous post about Deleye selling socks in a similar manner.

We Are One with CK One

On January 20, 2009 something very big happened. Yeah, it was the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first black president of the united states, but that’s not what I’m talking about. That day marked the re-launch of one of the most iconic fragrances of our generation: CK One by Calvin Klein.  This includes a new commercial directed by Francis Lawrence, a new print ad campaign by photographer Steven Meisel, and even a free song download by British musician Jamie Burke. Mr. Klein did not spare the expense. The campaign features a whopping total of  27 models captured by Steven Meisel.

The featured models are Allen Tsai, Anna Jagodzinska, August Templer, Cameron Russell, Caroline Ribeiro, Christina Kruse, Coco Rocha, Dennis, Gail O'Neill, Guinevere van Seenus, Guisela Rhein, Heidi Mount, Jamie Burke, Jamie Strachan, Jessica Miller, Johnny Zander, Joe Darcy, Kevin Flamme, Kirsten Owen, Linnea Russell, Liu Wen, Romulo Pires, Sacha Hanssens, Sessilee Lopez, Slater Davis, Travone Hill, and Will Lewis.

Softlan Ultra Makes Players Gay?

Ah, these ‘straight’ men! They blame a blowjob on being drunk and now they blame those famous sport-intimacies on fabric softeners. That is what this cheeky ad campaign for Softlan Ultra is about. Men not being able to resist the embrace of another sweaty man because his clothes are so soft. The ads were created by Y&R ad agency, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

After recently using Gypsies in her SS09 show, Vivienne Westwood brings the farm boys to her men's fall/winter 2009 runway during the current Milan Fashion Week with a redneck-chic vibe. Andres Gets Spicy in Ermenegildo Zegna Ads

Here's a post to spice things up a bit... Indian style. We've seen the Zegna Sport ads, but now here's a look at the Ermenegildo Zegna Couture SS 09 Campaign also with our model of the month, Andrés Velencoso Segura. Elephant cricket is not what you'd expect from an Italian luxury brand, but that's what makes this fun. Andres is joined in the campaign by Will Chalker, Ben Hill and Mathias Bergh.

Andrés Segura Interview: He Talks!!

We’ve been seeing pictures of Andrés Velencoso Segura everywhere. Understandably everyone is curious to see the model who’s dating Kylie Minogue. But I was curious to see the man in action so I dug up two recent videos. And I must say that my crush on him is further solidified after watching them :)

First up is an interview with Models.com back in May 2008.

And here is a video spot he did for Cortefiel S/S 2008 that was shot in Hollywood.

Best of 2008: Armani Jeans F/W 2009 Celebrate Bromance

Before the new atrocity that is Brody Jenner’s ‘Bromance’ reality show, Armani Jeans showcased male bonding and bromance in their Fall/Winter 2008-09 ad campaign. The ads, which were shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, featured pretty heavy bromance between Justin Gaston (aka, the guy dating Miley Cyrus), Marlon Teixeira (who is the only model in the new Dior Homme SS09 ads) and Jamie Dornan.

Model of The Month: Andrés Velencoso Segura

I’ve been contemplating starting a ‘Model of the Month’ feature for Homotography since the start of the new year, but I’ve been getting quite busy with my PhD thesis and didn’t want to take on too much, especially since the blog is only 2 months old. However, being currently fascinated with Spanish model Andrés Velencoso Segura (aka Kylie Minogue’s squeeze), I have so many cool posts planned about him, so I figured I might as well make him the first model of the month. Since I am starting this pretty late into the month (18th), I will probably keep him in this position the first week of February as well. We’ll see if that will be an official feature, but for now, enjoy everything Andres here.

Andres Velencoso Segura & Will Chalker For Zegna Sport

Zegna Sport picked Andres Velencoso Segura and Will Chalker to star their Spring Summer 2009 catalogue.  The shots are pretty cool for a catalogue, especially when Andrés is not wearing much of the clothes :) I have a couple more Andrés posts coming soon, so if you are a fan of the man, check back.

Blood-Thirsty Lara Stone by Steven Klein in Vogue Paris

Steven Klein starts 2009 with a loud bang with this intense photoshoot featuring Lara Stone, Travis Hanson and Doug Porter in the February issue (aka, the Lara Stone issue) of Vogue Paris. Lara Stone has the prestigious honor of starring in each and every editorial and photoshoot in this issue.

In addition to the obvious vampires & blood-drinking inspirations, Klein pays homage toe The Joker in the recent Batman movie (see interrogation room scene below).

Dolce & Gabbana Menswear Spring 2009 Ads

Here is the complete Dolce & Gabbana Menswear Spring 2009 ad campaign by Steven Klein. I didn't want to post it in pieces as it leaked one by one, but it was worth the wait. Enjoy the hotness of David Gandy, Noah Mills, Julien Quevenne and Adam Senn. While I am very iffy about the pajamas style, I am all for the fashionable eye-patch. And how cute is Gandy while he's kneeling down and praying?

Klein must have a thing for eye-patches because he shot Tyson Ballou wearing one last year for W.

Homotography Loves JD Ferguson

Homotography is damn excited about getting a shout-out from none other than JD Ferguson. Yes, the super cool and talented fashion photographer & writer himself wrote a very nice post in his blog about Homotography.

What makes this special is that we really love the man and his talent. His recent work capturing Armani, Versace, McQueen & more top fashion designers for VMan was featured in Homotography the first week we started. More is sure to follow. It’s been less than two months since I started Homotography, and to receive such positive feedback from a pro like JD makes it all worthwhile.

Best of 2008: Chad White by Ruven Afanador is Sublime

The year 2008 further cemented Chad White’s reputation as one of the top male models right now. The guy is diverse and up for anything, which is always good when you shoot with Steven Klein. But it is his ‘Sublime’ photoshoot with Ruven Afanador that marks White’s debut in Homotography’s Best of 2008 special feature.

The obvious eye-catching shot is that of Chad in feminine-looking lace underwear (and socks!), but do not let that visual shock take away from the brilliant photography of Afanador. My favorite is the neat-freak shot with Chad at a table with trimming and shaving tools. And who wouldn’t like a boyfriend that irons? Especially if he does it in the nude and has a body like Chad’s…

Chad White & Garrett Neff by Steven Klein for Loewe

The new Spring Summer 2009 ad campaign for Spanish leather & accessories luxury brand Loewe is a feast for the eyes thanks to brilliant photography by Steven Klein and superb art direction by Stuart Vever.

The ads feature the beauty of Garrett Neff and Amber Valletta. But who is that guy jumping into the pool in a couple of the shots? That would be the extremely hot Chad White, my friend.

The style of this campaign reminds me of the Love/Hate editorial that Steven Klein did last year for W Magazine with the equally hot Tyson Ballou which you can see here.

Speedo Cowboys Rock Out

I have a soft spot for cowboys in Speedos, especially if they are hunks like Doug Porter & Mark Ricketson who are captured by photographer Matthias Vriens for OUT Magazine.

Vriens is one of seven influential photographers that Out magazine asked to participate in their “Physique Pictorial” editorial that celebrates the magazine’s iconic homoerotic style. Other photographers are JAMES BIDGOOD, PIERRE ET GILLES, BENJAMIN ALEXANDER HUSEBY, DOUG INGLISH, WALTER PFEIFFER, and JACK PIERSON, with fashion styling by Grant Woolhead.

+ Sadly, aside from Vriens, the quality of the images did not live up to the hype of the photographers. See the whole feature at Out magazine

Weekend Hunk: Milo Ventimiglia

I’m thinking of starting a new ‘Weekend Hunk’ feature. It’s pretty much what the title says, a few quality images of a worthy hunk once a week. I know the ‘Weekend Hunk’ title is kinda expected and not so creative, but that’s what popped into my mind, if you have any cool suggestions, please leave a comment or drop me an email.

And what better way to pop the cherry of this new feature than have Heroes resident hunk Milo Ventimiglia be the first weekend hunk. The fir
