Interview Magazine, The 2010 Covers

With the inexplicable rarity of good magazine covers, I feel we should celebrate those few titles that still understand their importance. Following our post about the Dazed & Confused 2010 covers, we take a look at what Interview magazine delivered this past year. My personal favorite is the May cover (bow to the Queen). See them all after the jump.

Out There Magazine | The Freedom Issue

OUT THERE is a new bi-annual luxury journal targeted at professional metropolitan gay men with a focus on international queer culture, arts and travel. Released by independent London publishers Brown Tiger, the magazine makes its debut with “Issue One: The Freedom Issue” featuring actor Alan Cumming on the cover by photographer Minh Ngo.

According to the press release, the 200-pages issue “examines how gay freedom was won and how in some parts of the world, there is still so much to do. They talk to veterans of New York’s Stonewall uprising and to international activist Peter Tatchell about his experiences of the early days of the UK’s gay liberation front; and carry a damning report in partnership with the IGLHRC on the religious bigots who are exporting homophobia to Africa and beyond.”

Adonis Magazine #1 by Fred Goudon

Adonis is a new male photography magazine with a twist that I really like: it is only available as an iPhone or iPod Touch application. For those with a jet set lifestyle and always on the run, having instant access to quality eye candy by world famous photographers right on your portable device is well worth the $1.99 price tag.

Each issue of Adonis will be dedicated to one photographer. Acclaimed photographer Fred Goudon has the honor of helming the first issue with 84 exclusive images. As you can see by the preview of some of these images, the man knows a thing or two about capturing beautiful men.

Visual Tales by John Tan

Homotography congratulates stylist and casting director John Tan on the launch of his new project, Visual Tales magazine. The premier issue of the quarterly magazine features two books/covers: model Nick Hinman by Bell Soto above, and actor Luke Grimes by Dustin Beatty, below.

We asked John Tan about his motivation to start the new magazine and he explained, “It is my vision to start Visual Tales because I can foresee where independent fashion publishing is going. And since the US mens' titles are getting smaller and smaller due to the economy, I just felt it is a good time as any to introduce another alternative way/title to get some excitement back into the mix and not solely rely on the European big books as our only source for great fashion/inspiration. There are lots of talented people here that crave their chance to shine, and I want to hopefully give them the opportunity to do so. It is a work in progress, so this is only a taste of what's to come, from my perspective.”

John continued, “The magazine represents a mixed bag of who I am and  what I am known for thru my styling and casting work; but also throwing in ideas that other contributors might bring to the plate as well. Not one Visual Tales issue will be the same as another. I think a good and successful magazine should have surprises thrown in, such that not every issue is so predictable. With the internet, the creative freedom to explore and the possibilities are endless. For example, the mix of image, film and design. I also love the fact that it is very immediate, you don't have to wait for a long time to see the end results, unlike print. I am planning many varied projects to associate with this magazine, so a lot of creative things are definitely in the works.”

So how did the Visual Tales actually come to fruition? John explains, “I started this project very organically, I felt as though it created itself thru me...Yes, it is a bit daunting to think that I did a very large part of the work on my own, but I couldn't have done this without a bit of luck and support from my colleagues who took a chance and joined me for the ride. I am most grateful to them. It just goes to show, if you really love what you do, you can make things happen. I would encourage anyone who wants to do something they truly believe in for the right reasons, to just go for it... you got nothing to loose.”

We wish John and Visual Tales the very best, and we will surely keep you updated on their new features and issues.

The smaller images throughout this post are alternative covers celebrating the launch of Visual Tales. They were all shot by Bell Soto, featuring models Jans Vlas, Addison Duffy, Brady Donnelly, Spencer Brown, Jules Hamilton, and Martin Gruca.

Wallpaper* Undresses Baptiste Giabocini by Karl Lagerfeld

Love him or hate him, and there seems to be plenty of the latter, Baptiste Giabocini, is currently the #1 male model according to MDC. While many question his hype and modeling abilities, the blogosphere keeps talking about him and he books some very interesting gigs. Following his unorthodox naked in high heels shoot in the new Purple Fashion, the 19 year-old French model who is the current Karl Lagerfeld muse/toy-boy stars on the innovative cover of the new October 2009 issue of Wallpaper*. Shot by Lagerfeld, the issue features a special peelable cover that undresses the Dior Homme clad model and leaves him nude.  Enjoy the peep show in the below animated picture of the cover in action and some images from the editorial.

Baptiste also stars in an inside ‘historical themed’ 27-page editorial by Lagerfeld that was shot in Rome, Paris and other European cities. Here are some of the images, including a full frontal of a nude Mr. Giabocini.

The Faces of Tomorrow’s Fashion Heroes

hero magazine

In a time where publications scaling down or shutting off has become regular news, it is refreshing to see new magazines starting up. It is even better when the magazine offers a unique twist rather than follow another mag’s formula. HERO is the name of the new bi-annual magazine, and showcasing the emerging models who are just about to hit it big is their game. It is an intimate and fresh look at the faces who are on the verge of breaking out.

hero magazine

HERO’s launch issue has just been released with British model Robbie Wadge (recently seen in Dazed & Confused, Vogue Hommes Japan, AnOther Man, FHM Collections, Topman SS09 ads) landing the cover in a shoot by Matthew Kristall. Top agencies including Major Models, Re:Quest, Red, Models 1, Storm, Select, and VNY are represented through 28 models in this issue. The issue features exclusive interviews and photo shoots by Jeremy Kost, Sam Scott Schiavo, Stefan Heinrichs, Carlos Vazquez, Massimo Pamparana and Matthew Kristall.
